Unfortunately Paul Beckwith’s prime qualification is in Engineering Physics and he is working towards a higher qualification by studying climate science.

His lack of understanding of chemistry leads him to come up with silly notions, such as that we will implement negative emissions technology (around the 6 minute mark of the first video). And his engineering mindset leads him to promote geo-engineering.

I rang Paul at the University of Ottawa (above contact)
and spoke with him at length about 2 1/2 years ago. A nice chap and very sincere, but I did not get the answers I was looking for (in connection with methane).

    ‘Current research interests
    Abrupt climate change (system analysis)
    Arctic sea-ice behaviour
    Methane and carbon dioxide concentrations’

Never mind, all part of the weird journey I have been on for many years.

I do admire Paul for sticking his neck out and actually making an attempt to communicate the dire predicament we are in to the general public. But when he starts talking about cooling the Arctic or removing CO2 from the atmosphere, what can we say? Only that about 90 billion barrels of oil go up in smoke every day and that an unknown, but absolutely humungous, quantity of coal is burned every day, so the atmospheric CO2 concentration goes up and up and up.

What a ‘nice’ way to start 2017:

    Daily CO2
    January 1, 2017:  406.35 ppm
    January 1, 2016:  401.82 ppm

Daily fluctuations do result in wide-ranging date-to-date difference values but there is no denying the catastrophic trend, unless your lifestyle depends on the extraction and burning of coal and oil etc.

This is the kind of intellectual garbage being passed around among the know-it-all self-congratulatory ‘elites’: How To Worry About Climate Change

I barely know where to begin to demolish the ridiculous claims and straw arguments being made. What stands out to me is how little intellectuals grasp the fundamentals of what is at stake here.

NO concept of what 3C or 4C represents in terms of economic decline or impacts. Not even any grasp of the worst-case scenario predicted by the IPCC assessment (which we have exceeded).

This is a “rational assessment”? It screams volumes of clueless optimism and deflectory remarks.

“His lack of understanding of chemistry leads him to come up with silly notions,” SO TRUE –
but he and other vocal activists (e..g Guy, Mann, Hansen et al) are ‘asking’ for a bullet … the way things are going. – Not a prediction, just saying I’d be somewhat surprised if they haven’t been the recipients of death threats already. There are more than enough lunatics – all too easily bought by manifold vested interests (extinctionists) in the status quo – that it almost seems basically inevitable that. A parallel topic is are there any planet protectionists with gonads sufficient to dispatch the Thermonuclear-grade Cheeto in Chief (and cohorts). Pretty sure people are going to have to start dying in the interest of any possibility of change at all in protecting life for more than a decade or two. Even then, I suspect any/all actions or lack thereof is entirely irrelevant at this point in the medium ntm long term. The shit has left the revolving impeller, headed for the wall near you (aka us, along with ALL multicellular life)

Thinking of suggesting to Deek that his next musical/album should be something like “Requiem for Terra”, with tracks such as Gaiapocalyse, Malevolent Monkey Mischief, Terminal Prophet , Oblivion beckons, Planet Rape Rag, Ballad of Stupid, Anus Ape Angst, featuring The Extinction Tabernacle Choir etc.

      Dear God,

Please keep Lonewolf alive for our (my) descent into the Apocalypse! He always makes me laugh and I know how much laughter means to you. It’s clear you had a massive joke in mind when you created mankind.

the stone age didn’t because of running out of stones. the anthropocene won’t end when running out of anthro’s (assholes)

    Daily CO2
    January 2, 2017:  407.05 ppm
    January 2, 2016:  401.83 ppm

    Up 5.22 ppm date-to-date.

I know, it doesn’t mean anything because the daily CO2 fluctuates, depending on weather conditions and how much is absorbed into the oceans.

We will need many more date-to-date results like this, one after another, before the powers that be decide to do absolutely nothing about emissions and continue to promote the burning of fossil fuels. After all, Lord Stern told us all a decade ago that we could stablise at 450 ppm to 550 ppm!

This is from 10 years ago: ‘We currently stand at around 383ppm of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and are adding more than 2ppm every year.’

There’s more C02 in winter (in this hemisphere). But those numbers are still gigantic.

Nobody should expect the idiots-that-be to do the right thing. They have amply proven themselves utterly incapable of it. Politics and environment / survival / habitat do not mix, it’s literally oil and water, and guess what rises to the top?
