False Skepticism

Something ‘interesting’ and worth being aware of as you read any information and commentary online. I came across this article – which alleges that there are 500 new papers in 2016 that deny global warming. The source for this article is No Tricks Zone article, a blog by Pierre Gosselin.

I read through Gosselin’s article and some papers and presented a reply:

The disingenuous “conclusions” of this site are astounding – and utterly unacceptable. All of these papers do NOT state what is being claimed, the hope is that you will not read them and understand their contexts.

The clear agenda is to continue to seed doubt, to deceive, mislead and plant mistrust. This is why actual content and quotations are missing, you might actually bother to go read the material for yourselves to verify the claims being made.

It’s a shitty tactic – from a shitty, disinformation website. There’s more, such as the journals and publications that accept these papers, their peer-reviewed processes and even the authors themselves. What you’re supposed to ‘believe’ is that 500 papers cast reasonable doubt and reinforce the claims made in the opening paragraph above – when they do no such thing.

This is a site for idiots and morons to peruse but not investigate (it’s been done elsewhere). A disinformation campaign that takes less then 5 seconds to disprove with a simple Google search.

This site does not fool anybody but idiots. Pierre Gosselin is a fraud and will remain a fraud followed by fools.

However, rather then permitting the complete reply above to be posted, it was quickly modified down to just this:

This is a site for idiots and morons to peruse but not investigate (it’s been done elsewhere). A disinformation campaign that takes less then 5 seconds to disprove with a simple Google search.

This site does not fool anybody but idiots. Pierre Gosselin is a fraud and will remain a fraud followed by fools.

Undeterred, I tried one more time, posting this on Gosselin’s website:

Hey, thanks for censoring my comments. It does reveal even more about you. Your fears at being discovered as a fraud are well-founded, as in “too late”.

(Yes, I keep records of ALL my posts for republishing on my blog so that I can share what I’ve uncovered about the opposition with my own readership – where I do not practice censorship).

This was removed entirely, proving all of my original points. Gosselin is a fraud, and so is his website. He’s been discovered now by me and previously by many others (do a web search). He’s only interested in “faking” his narrative about climate change. Any investigation into his claims is censored on his site. He’s LYING about the 500 papers and desperately does not want anyone to know it.

Gosselin did however allow a “Kenneth Richards” his say:

You’re right, JR. You have effectively disproved this entire website in a matter of 5 seconds with those two links. Oh that you had been here sooner.

To which I attempted this reply – but this was also removed in a few seconds:

I dislike lazy people, such as yourself. Not only were my comments heavily censored (most of the content and expose was removed, but I have a complete copy), but you are supposed to be competent and capable enough to follow basic instructions and go look this site up. So “5 seconds” is apparently all the Pierre “allows”. So much for being here sooner – Pierre’s position is dissent is undeserving of anything more.

The “rest” as they say is history. There is another ranting denier reply allowed posting, but of course, it would be even more pointless to write what nobody is permitted to read, so I won’t.

Presenting a totally false narrative and representation to the readership is a common tactic among denier websites. It creates the illusion of common agreement with the author’s position. It is however, totally false and an indication that these authors are frauds in more ways then one.

So after all this, I even tried to post my comments on the first website where I found the original article.

You reference “No Tricks Zone” which does indeed play dirty tricks. The “500 papers” you also reference are not what you think they are. No Tricks Zone practices censorship of dissent. Will you? Here is what is not being posted in full over there:

Well, surprise, surprise – these comments were also removed in their entirety. Two sites, multiple attempts, massive censorship.

Among deniers, there is little to no interest in hearing any dissents, facts, evidence or opinions. Which means (drum-roll …..) that their arguments against climate science, global warming, scientists and science itself is weak at best and fabricated at worst. And that’s all before we get to the actual facts that can’t be discussed.

Full disclosure – I’ve seen this many times before, but I thought that this current ‘lesson’ worth sharing with my readers. This fabricate a false narrative meme is very common and found on all right-wing websites, climate denier websites (to my knowledge, the ones I’ve tried to participate in) and many, many “main stream” websites too. The StupidNet rules. It is very much a big part of the problem we are dealing with when it comes to knowledge, education and basic understanding of many issues, not just climate change.

Do NOT trust the Internet as your only source of information. Do not trust the ‘consensus’ that appears as it is likely entirely fabricated. And don’t waste your time on Gosselin’s site or the Heartland blog either.

Heartland has been notorious for many years for promulgating disinformation. Funded by big oil and big coal.
The world is riddled with such phony ‘institutes’ whose sole purpose is to promulgate disinformation and to foment confusion.

I recently came across an interesting concept, which although I was aware of, had not seriously thought about for a while.

It can be called Station Syndrome, or Passer-by Syndrome. A person using transport or just walking along a street sees headlines on billboards but does not see the full article.

The headline may say: ‘Putin accused of hacking US election’. Or ‘Climate Change Challenged!’

The actual article my then go on to say that no evidence was found for Putin hacking US elections, but the passer-by only sees and remembers the headline. The article may go on to say that the challenge to climate change was refuted, but the passer-by only sees and remembers the headline.

We live in societies which are manipulated by neuro-linguistic programming.

Sadly, I must say that my local council is the prime perpetrator of neurolingustic programming around here, mimicking central government, of course. ‘Greed is good.’ “Growth is good.’ ‘Climate change will be good for the region.’ ‘Working for a better, brighter future.’ ‘Protecting the environment.’ ‘Protectingm enhancing and developing our natural resources.’

Pointing out reality leads to deletion of comments, of course.

Read a comment from a reader on a weather site the other day that claimed there were 1000 “peer reviewed” articles denying climate change published in 2016. I felt like replying (but didn’t), that even dumb asses have peers!

They’re making it up. I think they’re in a type of panic because for many years, their position has been indefensible and getting worse. So now they simply manufacture wild claims and present them as ‘truth’.

I’m engaged in a private email with another person who has done this. He published his article in Lompoc, making numerous false claims about the temperature record. My first email showed him where to find the information that would correct his claims, he chose to claim it wasn’t worth looking at (despite this being the actual science). He insisted his position was correct, so once again, I showed him where he failed in his methodology to use actual science, mathematics, experts and so forth. That pissed him off and he resorted to name calling.

The opposition is wrong – we all know this, but they’re attacking truth now more then before. They’re too afraid, too cowardly, too embarrassed to admit being wrong. It’s quite silly actually, but it reveals that these people were never interested in the truth, just their own false narrative. Pretty common these days.

So many times when individuals make claims in their writing for which the science or data does not back them they simply reference others making the same unsubstantiated claim.

When you require a higher standard of proof and try to verify the claim with hard data or reliable corroboration by going to the referenced sources you find yourself simply going in circles with everyone simply parroting everyone else. At that point it’s best to assume the claim as suspect.

There is so much pseudo-science being published on the internet. In the past when publishing something required a lot more work and effort more of the BS got weeded out. Now anyone with a laptop and an internet connection can make themselves sound like an expert even though they have no clue. Worse yet they can be paid sound like an expert but lie.

Definitely recommend everyone watch both of these. Good summary on food shocks too.

Wow! Notice the HUGE number of empty chairs. One of the most important presentations the entire world needs to know – and nobody shows up!

The battle between those who present facts and those who ignore them or deliberately misuse them is a worldwide battle because, as we here know, huge profits and the high-living lifestyles of a lot of people are at stake. Although we can condemn the Guardian for peddling false ‘solutions’ it is doing a good job tackling the climate change denial industry.

    Tuesday 10 January 2017

‘Scientists have proven time and time again that global warming continues unabated. Most recently, a study published last week showed that over the past two decades, the oceans have warmed faster than prior estimates. This study affirmed the findings of a 2015 NOAA paper – not surprisingly attacked by deniers – that removed a cool bias in the data, finding there never was a global warming “pause.”

This particular myth has been a favorite of deniers over the past decade for one simple reason – if people can be convinced that global warming stopped, they won’t consider it a threat that we need to urgently address by cutting fossil fuel consumption. It’s thus become one of the most common myths peddled by carbon polluters and their allies….’

This is the kind of complete stupidity being widely spread on disinformation website. I received this comment in response to my own commentary about some of the false information I saw posted on an article. Emphasis is mine, as is [comments] I responded with.

“you understand virtually nothing about the science, the measurements, the warming, the rising sea levels, the missing ice, species extinctions.

    1) Measurements are not valid in making the claims and this is acknowledged by the IPCC when they admit that they ATTRIBUTE things and provide CONFIDENCE LEVELS which are actually quite hilarious. [Actually, the IPCC compiles their information from research papers that DON’T attribute things. Actual measurements are used in those papers, but if you say that ‘measurements are not valid’ does that mean I can have your paycheck?]

    2) Warming has been going on since the last ice age. Since before humans existed. There have been many periods of warming AND cooling comparable to the warming (and cooling) we see today and the big difference was there were NO HUMANS so they could NOT have been caused by humans. [Straw arguments and absolutely no relevancy to the rapid warming now occurring]

    3) Rising sea levels – this too has happened before. There’s noting unusual or alarming about it. The sea levels have been rising since the last ice age also, as normal, natural warming has caused more water to be available FOR LIFE. [oh boy, this one is new to me. More water to be available in the seas? The existing levels of the world’s ocean aren’t enough? That’s a really stupid claim to be making, which seeks to deflect from how sea levels are impacting land-based life and infrastructure].

    4) There is no “missing ice”. The ice melted, it’s there as water. That you would even say that shows your own ignorance. We have not seen a single complete polar cycle. We know that the ice at the north pole tends to ebb and flow over multi decadal timescales – there is ample evidence of this although without the convenient satellite views we have now. As for “missing ice”, well I guess you missed that the latest, greatest science from the top snow and ice scientist at NASA says that snow and ice are accumulating in Antarctica at a rate that more than makes up for global losses EVERYWHERE ELSE. [So if we cut down a tree and turn it into lumber, the tree is not missing either? Are people truly this stupid? He obviously knows nothing about what is actually happening in Antarctica]

That’s right, the NET GAIN of ice and snow in the Antarctic was 82 billion tons of ice per year between 2003 and 2008 – more than enough to make up for GLOBAL losses of landed ice. Don’t waste time arguing with me about it – look him up, call him up and tell HIM he’s wrong. [It’s actually a net loss, but I’m not allowed to waste his time with it because his mind is made up].

    5) Extinctions? More outright lies and exaggerations. Due to things OTHER THAN CO2, humans are impacting many species. Land use changes, habitat destruction, urban sprawl, over fishing, THIRD WORLD pollution – all of these things and others cause a REDUCTION in populations of many species. [But no extinctions… which disagrees with the science]

That is not what “EXTINCTION” is. Extinction is the total loss of all members of a species. Yes, SOME species, a vanishingly small number, are going extinct. This is actually normal – it happened before humans existed. Extinction events are when whole classes and families of species are wiped out by a catastrophic event – the K-T event killed off 70% of oceanic species and 90% (these are approximate percentages) of terrestrial (land) species. [So if ‘extinctions’ are not actually happening, then why are these species no longer found? Are the researchers lying? Do we need to await an asteroid impact to ‘convince you’?

We’re not experiencing losses of even 10% of species. We’re seeing reductions in populations, not extinctions. [Definitely not 10% – it’s approaching 50% by 2050 and 90% in the world’s oceans of food fish, but hey’s it’s not “losses” or “extinctions” according to you and your weird definitions – we just can’t find them or eat them anymore. Maybe the aliens took them all away, so they’re not “extinct”. Do I dare mention that over 90% of all species have already been lost in history? Nah, better not]

And most of it is exaggerated. The polar bear is a great example. Their populations are actually GROWING, but to try to push their cause, alarmists claimed the opposite.” [Their numbers are declining (overall) and expected 30%. Pictures of starved polar bears abound – and their skeletons. They died from malnutrition]

It is clear to me, that the actual knowledge levels of denialists is extremely low, extremely poor and extremely wrong. But they’re quite willing to manufacture and conjure up whatever arguments they “think” will make their case.

    Definitely the “StupidNet”.
