Doomer Porn and Real “Fiction”

In case you didn’t know, “Robert Scribbler” is a fiction writer turned climate-science writer.  Usually he sticks to climate related articles, but he’s got a supposed fiction story about what it’s like in 2090 in Florida posted on his blog. It’s an entertaining climate-doom read.

But it is inaccurate and grossly underplays what it’s really going to be like by 2090.

This has always been Scribbler’s problem — like many of the scientists he has promoted, he has consistently underestimated the severity of the unfolding disasters and what humans have come to expect. He’s become one of the most read – and false narratives of all within the climate meme (something he’s really trying to fix). He’s tried very hard to insist on this false narrative too — something I’ve pointed out several times before. Yet he has slowly come around to the true severity of what is unfolding and what is a real threat (such as the methane “threat”) whereas before, he downplayed these claims by other scientists and researchers and anyone who dared to point them out.

The situation by 2090 will be far, far worse then he’s described. Interestingly, in this fictional work he admits to an 8 foot sea level rise — which he has many times claimed before will not be possible, so what we may finally be seeing here is a growing awareness that his past estimates are getting a much-needed update.

But he’s not there yet. Read the linked article above first. My comments are always removed from his site so I don’t even bother anymore, but here’s where he’s still wrong about the 2090 predictions:

It will be much worse then this in 2090. This “doomer porn” piece grossly underestimated what it means to lose the global food production. Growing food indoors and underground will not feed more then a few thousand people in any given region. Everything has to be “imported” into these artificial environments, soil, light, heating and cooling, water, nutrients and then maintain it all, which is extremely energy intensive (and calorie deficient when you realize what is actually being grown). The reality is when we lose our ability to grow food on the surface and in a natural environment, we’re doomed. It won’t be just food that will be gone, it will be everything else too (nearly all existing life).

This means die-off on a massive scale (billions will starve to death) long before the “heat” kills them. When the plants are gone everything else will also be gone. The same is true for the toxic soup the oceans will have become, under his scenario, even oxygen will be severely depleted due to the massive plankton die-off in the world’s oceans. His scenario seriously downplays our chances of survival and how many humans will be left. If it’s as bad as this — we will already be long gone (which is exactly where a growing number of scientists are predicting). It’s not popular (or even safe) to make such claims so you really have to dig around to find them. I’m not a tenured professor so I get to say whatever I want.

Water sources will also be long gone, especially near the rising seas. Polluted, depleted and salt-water intrusion will be so bad that most of the coastal locations will be unlivable. Those that “survive” will require a constant supply of ducted water which will need to be buried for protection (against pollutants, evaporation, hoarding).

Low-lying coastal regions like Tampa will have long since been abandoned leaving only a few thousand people (if any) by 2090 — and not because of rising seas, but because of the inability to actually survive there. If the timeline was moved up to 2050 or even a bit sooner, then a lot of this “fiction” would be much more accurate.

There won’t be a hundred-thousand “emergency responders” left in Tampa in 2090 either. If there are that many left in the entire country, they won’t be in Tampa. The reality is die-off will begin far sooner then this on a massive scale and it won’t be picking who survives and who doesn’t. Southern states will fare quite badly, but no place will be immune (dehydration and starvation don’t respect borders).

I don’t know if he’s intending to sell another book that has to be “palatable” for the buying audience (who don’t want to hear that they and their children are facing this reality) or what. Scribbler is still promoting Hillary Rotten Cunton (sorry, but I truly hate this woman) which is a goddamned mystery — unless you realize that Scribbler really is all about maintaining the status-quo, so it’s no wonder that his work of fiction is essentially the same thing. As doomer porn goes, it’s inaccurate to say the least, but descriptive and entertaining.

Americans are seriously underinformed and almost completely unprepared for what is now unfolding. There is still a contingent of babbling idiots — primarily uninformed (or willfully stupid) Americans who “don’t believe in climate change” which is about as dumb as it gets. Belief has absolutely nothing to do with reality and the reality of a vastly accelerated warming world is easily proven.

Sou, over on “Hot Whopper” has an article titled “Another ice age fear for England – only at WUWT”. Sou does a great job denying the deniers with real facts and real science and real measurements, but if you pay attention, most of these idiots she’s pointing out are Americans. This isn’t because we’re stupider then most, it’s because there is a huge effort in America to disinform the public who are themselves lazy and apathetic and refuses to read past any of the headlies in today’s media. Any article of more then 200 words is “too long” for our attention-deficit bretheren.

Sou lets me post and doesn’t censor or edit anything I’ve ever written there, so I posted a tongue-in-cheek response to her excellent article. But I have to admit — I’m pretty tired of having to cater to absolute idiots and fools who live with their eyes closed, their ears plugged and their tongues incessantly wagging absolute nonsense. These people are a blight — and impediment to human progress and even basic things like hope or “try”. They insist on reamaining stupid, clueless, uninformed and ignorant — no matter how many times they’re proven wrong.

I need to move on and I know it. Life is becoming increasingly short for all of us. The “fiction” scenario that Scribbler wrote needs to be updated by about 50 years sooner. The Earth’s environment is absolutely reeling from the onslaught of humanity’s impact and depredations. Serious and even severe environmental conditions are unfolding all of the world right now. Quite frankly, if you are not preparing for this future you are a fool. None of us can stop what is happening, but on the other hand, none of us wants to die from dehydration or starvation either.

There will also be many other ways we’re going to die and in all honesty, none are truly preventable. At best, we can “manage” our time left (versus ignore what is unfolding). Given this irrevocable condition, what makes the best response? I’ll die comfortably (if I can), but not in ignorance or by starvation.

The future isn’t fiction — it’s real, and though many people have tried to convey what it may mean, none get it quite right (not even me of course). Written in 2006, only the names need to be changed (and a update on the climate situation). There is no doubt that massive levels of migration will occur (non-stop) to the Bio Regional Zones where survival remains possible. This is YOUR future, like it or not.  Every single human on the planet needs to be aware of this — and how the choices that you make right now will greatly impact your life, your comfort and your safety.

There are many other posts just like this back in the blog archives. Due the large number of posts found here, it’s difficult even for me to point them all out, but here are a few:

There is no other blog on the Internet like this one. Nobody else has bothered to project the folly of human stupidity and indifference like I have. Many, many times I have thought to destroy this blog and all of the work within it because of the incredible apathy and indifference that I constantly uncover. The history and the predictions found on this blog should have been enough to generate something, but the words never did.

Probably the best years of my life where spent right here, writing. Trying. It’s now 2016 and I feel as if I have totally failed. I ran into some serious health issues and slowed things way down (and still have), realizing that what needed to be said and shared already was. But the audience out there moved on to other things and I didn’t. Now, there are a lot of other writers out there who are claiming to be collapse writers. They get attention, money, support, advertising and promotion. I never did.

I never will, because I refused to endorse the liars, thieves, wanna be’s and charlatans that are vying for your dollars and attention. Many of you fucking idiots still support these fools while ignoring everyone else who was really trying to help without ripping you off. I decided to leave up the blog anyway, but I also decided to write a lot less. I can’t afford to sit here month after month living on nothing.

I’m way past the point of even caring what other people think when I write harsh but truthful words. You fucking morons have endorsed the wrong people and you keep doing it. You’re so fucking cheap that you’ll glean everything you can from those who have given it all freely to you and then go support somebody else with your dollars. Well, fuck you and yours, your ethics and integrity absolutely suck. Your “prophets” have all been proven wrong. You embrace their lies, deceptions and false advertising. You believe that your “part of something” when the joke is really on you (again). You don’t have the balls or the courage to admit that you’ve been misled.

You still don’t get it. You’re on the wrong side. The future isn’t going to be what any of these fakes are claiming and most of you have done little to nothing about it. You keep hoping that they’ll come up with a better answer, a better outcome. Well, you’re wrong. There isn’t going to be a better outcome then that which has been shared right here. In fact, it will be worse then I can describe because I’m simply not very good at it. But not from a lack of trying.

Believe whatever “fiction” you like, but prepare for reality. Only one will come true.

Yeah, I was blocked from Scribbler’s site on my very first post there. This was when he endorsed Killary and I said, “Nope, can’t have a non-delusional global warming policy side-by-side with war and neoliberalism.”

You’d think the guy would be smart enough to understand this.

I think I posted by points of what, bare-minimum, a non-delusional global warming policy would look like here before, and also over at Ulvfugl’s Mons Angelorum. Just to drive home to any Scribbler fan or Killary supporter how utterly and completely delusional they are—literally delusional in the true sense of suffering from some sort of cognitive information processing disfunction—here’s that again.

    ***

Truly, even if the physical chemistry were not already irreversible—even granting that—the chance of a meaningful policy to arrest ecocide is virtually nil. Think what that policy would require, at bare minimum:

    1) Ending debt-based money creation, which mandates that people must pursue economic growth, that is, converting more and more low-entropy terrestrial stock into high entropy heat and waste. The more debt there is, the more growth required, and the faster the movement along the arrow of entropy. Are any of our environmentally minded elites proposing solutions along these lines? No? Then we can kiss our ass goodbye, since it absolutely guarantees the ecocide will not stop.

    2) Reversing globalization in favor of localization, self-sufficient economies where producers live close to consumers for a smaller ecological footprint. Instead, elites call for more of the former, more EU, more TTIP, more TTP, more war, more austerity.

Take the case of elitist Al Gore. Made the movie, sounded the alarm, got the Nobel Peace Prize … and yet, he’s pro NAFTA and globalization. Just one of the things NAFTA did was to enrich giant, subsidized, mechanized, American petroleum-based agriculture while displacing millions of Mexican small farmers.

Obviously, if you believe in AGW and truly understand its implications, then you want less subsidized, mechanized, petroleum-based everything, and more locally-based self-sufficient communities. Keep the millions of small Mexican peasant farmers doing their thing.

But of course, Mr. Gore, the Nobel prize winner, wants just the opposite. Globalization and “business-oriented” solutions.

    3) De-ubanization and de-suburbanization. Both city and suburb are designed to maximize fuel consumption. As long as we have to drive to jobs, schools, supermarkets in order to survive, the engine of ecocide will keep tearing along. Our societies in the West were constructed this way, essentially a zoo-cage for human animals.

What’s needed is a program of re-ruralization. Any elites talking about that? See any chance of this down the road? No? Then kiss your ass goodbye.

    4) Population control.

Oh, no, I said it! Obviously I’m a Nazi eugenicist who wants to “weed out the unfit” or some other such nonsense. (And they call us “alarmist”!)

Except… we’ve known since the sixties that we were too many. Then, we could have voluntarily reduced our population with a one-child per woman policy and eventually gotten down to a population of about a billion.

Now? You’d have to be even more draconian. Maybe one woman in five could have one child until we got down to replacement-level population, where our ecological footprint was in balance with the living world’s ability to recycle heat and waste and regenerate living habitat.

Don’t like that policy? Kiss your ass goodbye.

    5) Decarbonization. Reducing the amount we put in the air is not enough. We need to draw the stuff out. Except we don’t know how to do that in the time required at the scale required, which is why McPherson calls this “fantasy technology.”

Still, if our elites were serious about stopping AGW, they wouldn’t be spending hundred of billions of dollars on war. They’d be spending hundreds of billions of dollars on some way to suck carbon out of the air and ground it.

Are they doing this? Are they even trying? Of course not. Plenty of money for banking bailouts and surrounding Russia and shipping jihadis into Syria, but in regard to decarbonization, there’s no real call to arms. Which means: they’re not serious.

But… but, but, but… if you call them out on this, you’re a doomer, you’ve lost hope, you’re damaging people’s ability to psychological function (by living in ignorant denial).

Those five points are the bare minimum that would be needed in order to implement anti-AGW policy that was not based upon delusion. Bare minimum. And that’s with the very generous assumption that the physical chemistry itself has not yet attained an irreversible momentum.

    ***

Let’s talk turkey. Two turkeys: Trump and Killary. One is an AGW denialist, and one isn’t. So Scribbler supports the non-denialist, Killary. Logical, yes?

Well, if you reason like a seven year old child, I guess it is. But if you reason like an adult who has thought these things through, it’s blatantly obvious that there is zero effective difference between either candidate on the issue of AGW. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Because there is no more chance that Killary is going to move closer to a non-delusional GW policy than Trump.

Which of the five bare-minimum planks will she endorse?

All good points. And every single one of them will be widely ignorned or dismissed. You know it and I know it. We’re dealing with fucking idiots now, absolutely everywhere. Too goddamned stupid to read the writing on the wall and too indifferent to even care.

There isn’t a writer out there that publishes the truth about what we’re all truly facing (versus just a few commentators); nor do they ever offer any kind of meaningful solution, just more BAU b.s. hopium in one flavor or another, wrapped up all pretty and palatable for the ignorant masses to glom on to. It’s all become a game of propaganda and mind control when the real issue, the only issue that even fucking matters now is survival. Everything else is secondary, but this reality hasn’t even crossed the minds of these idiots.

Anyone that dares breach their fortified walls of delusionary fantasies is a swift victim of the dog-pile / dog-shit effect. We’ve all seen it. Wherever one dog takes a shit, others follow. It’s essential to leave your mark and pledge your allegience to the fascist folly of fools who forgot all about any kind of brakes or downshifting this unfolding global disaster.

It is so painfully clear that none of these people are even slightly serious about offering anything of substance. Like every other ‘movement’ now co-opted and taken over by campaign slogans and incessant propaganda, underneath their proposals lies the same ugly dark truths of absolute nothingness. Nothing they suggest will do a damned thing except make another segment of the corptocracy richer still while categorically ensuring the global death of the habitable biosphere.

We’re not just bitching here — we’re pointing out the fatal flaws in their arguments and proposals which are pathetically childish and ridiculous. We’re not hoping for the collapse either, but we’re stating the obvious — it’s utterly unfk’n avoidable now precisely because of their damned dickering around and pretending. And the astounding thing is, everybody is in on this deception in varying degrees, but only through sheer ignorance and a refusal to connect all the dots. It’s as if the death of the biosphere is some esoteric ‘alternate reality’ that can’t be fathomed by most, and yet it’s literally staring us all right in the face.

There is so much dirt and grime (and blood) on Hillary’s hands that I’ve decided that anyone who supports this evil bitch is my mortal enemy for life. If I can find out the truth behind these criminals — so can everyone else. No doubt there will be people who will vote for her, but the fraud behind this (s)Election is already outrageous enough for me to claim that whoever is installed in the Whitehouse will not be lawfully elected.

Trump is a goddamned fool, ignorant to reality and the way of the world while claiming he’s prescient and the only qualified person in the entire country. Hordes of brain dead morons are lining up behind him because he caters to their paranoia and fears, bigotry and hatred, but it’s hard to tell who the bigger fool is, Trump or his followers. Probably his followers because they should know better by know if they’ve been paying attention. Trump is an opportunist and always has been, the Presidency is just another challenge for him, but he’s not seriously interested in even running the country. Trump offer the country nothing but a backwards slide into more xenophobia and hatred. He won’t do anything for a habitable future, but he’ll promise the moon (to be strip-mined later should we last that long).

Hillary scares the hell out of me and no, she won’t endorse any of your five points. Nobody will. It’s asking too much. Survival isn’t even a passing thought to these brain dead fools.

Another puzzler for me is John Michael Greer. If there was ever blogger that possessed the intellectual chops to understand the reality of NTHE, it’s the Archdruid.

And yet, when it comes to NTHE, he seems to totally hand wave the issue away. His argument against seems to be that because in the past “doomer cults” have been incorrect in their predictions, those who are convinced of the present reality of NTHE can be dismissed from consideration as equally irrational.

Epistemology, anyone? The abundance of evidence as presented in the peer-reviewed journals surely bears a greater weight of reliability than that of personal religious revelation and mystical visions.

So why make that argument to the exclusion of confronting NTHE head-on?

Has anyone reading his site ever come across an essay where he confronts NTHE in an open fashion? Because if he does, I can’t find it. Instead, what I find are invitations to essay contests in which the writers speculate on what “Dark Ages America” will be like in 500 years.

Well, heck, if I thought we’d have an actual Dark Ages in America 500 years from now, complete with horses and buggies and oxen helping to till the soil, I’d jump with joy.

I find it supremely difficult to accept that JMG doesn’t understand all the implications of everything pointed out in this blog, and in others, like McPherson’s and so on. But not only does he not confront it, he seems to hand wave it away.

I’m left with a head-scratcher. Here’s guy whose an obvious intellectual heavyweight, who’s writing explicitly within the ecological arena, but as far as NTHE goes, he doesn’t wrestle with it, engage it, acknowledge even the real possibility of it. Instead, what I see is … just a hand wave.

indeed scribbler does not admit what he sees. in 2090, the grid will necessarily be gone for some time, and all things nuclear will be spewing radiation big time all over this planet, to name a few.

I quit giving credence to Scribbler when I read a few years ago that he was still considering having a child.

I disengaged from the on-line doomer community years ago also because most, especially in the NTHE group, never had any intention of doing anything. It was much easier to believe it was too late and to continue their comfortable lifestyles. The majority of vocal doomers are older males who never had an original thought, swallowed their societal training hook, line, and sinker (especially concerning monetary success), and now gladly take credit for being “aware” while still enjoying their material comforts.

You can’t stop it, I am sure Dennis Meadows was hopeful in the ’70s but you suffer the same misconception he did then. This is not a technical problem, it’s a human behavioural problem. What do the experts in the field of human behaviour say ?

“climate change activist George Marshall interviews the Nobel prizewinning psychologist Daniel Kahneman, the leading scholar of cognitive biases, and tries to nudge him into saying that understanding our brains’ limitations will, at the very least, make it easier to overcome them. “I’m not very optimistic about that,” Kahneman replies, despondently sipping tomato soup. *“No amount of psychological awareness will overcome people’s reluctance to lower their standard of living. So that’s my bottom line: there is not much hope. I’m thoroughly pessimistic. I’m sorry.” *

That’s the point, knowledge doesn’t beget action, how many here know what needs to be done and don’t do it ? All you get is excuses.

Individuals have some chance of ameliorating the ?orst of the outcomes by adding some resilience and having a crap load of luck. [end quote]

He continues to endorse the Democrats in a misguided ‘hope’ that this is the best option and in the belief that ‘they’ll do something’. I’ve run into this myself many times before, holding on to one cherished ideology which directly contradicts another. In this regard, he’s absolutely no different then the deniers he rails against for their beliefs. It’s an amazing contortion to behold.

What’s a Reddit? Just kidding. It’s someplace I never go. Killed off my Facebook account and am choosing to avoid ‘social media’ as a saner course of action. The world has gone increasingly insane (imo) and it is essential to build a buffer around the windows you’re permitted to look out of (that’s a hint). Of course, it’s all scripted so choose your windows carefully.

Information has become the most powerful weapon in the world to human minds, but it means nothing when it comes to the physical world. Isn’t it funny how we fight and argue over these things we call words, while the real ‘battle’ as it were, cannot even be encapsulated by such ethereal things? Humans have fallen, hook, line and sinker for the false reality of mere words as the defining mechanisms by which they govern their lives and very thoughts. Words matter, actions don’t. It’s sad and pathetic, definitely evidence that we are seriously declined.

Yes. Because of this predominant attitude amongst many doomer bloggers and posters, I lost all interest in what they had to convey, right or wrong. I’ve read more than a few cutting comments directed towards folks who are diminishing their ecological impact and/or volunteering for a cause outside their immediate DNA’s interests as being egotistical attempts at self-promotion and attaining “saint” credit, haha!

Well, if that’s the case, then Jose Mujica is a fucking narcissist! Here are two of the very few good comments from McPherson’s old blog in response to do-nothing Buddhists and average first-world doomers who twist themselves into pretzels explaining why making no effort is goooooood:

In reference to “How to Save Humanity,” it wouldn’t have hurt if we had had more shining souls like Mujica throughout our history; unfortunately, his type has always been squashed by the obvious powermongers, of course, and by those who play with ideas to bolster their desire to do nothing. Humanity has never stood a chance.

I have only recently come across this item and the gems contained within (having been involved in climate and energy activism for two decades, and now having pretty much given up because of the apathy, stupidity, complacency and manipulation that characterise western societies.

Scribbler’s writing are an odd blend of good science, bad science and hopium.

My researches into climate change indicate conditions for the production of food will deteriorate globally from about now on (up until now losses in some regions have been compensated for by gains in other regions). In combination with declining EROEI and a net decline in internationally tradable oil this will bring about an unstoppable global financial-economic-social crisis from around 2020 on.

It’s all playing out much as suggested in the early 1970s:

    http://energyskeptic.com/2016/limits-to-growth-is-on-schedule-collapse-likely-around-2020/

I personally believe it will get very grim for most people after 2020, and the likelihood of any existing industrial system functioning into the 2030s seems close to zero.

Whether anyone will survive beyond 2040 is debatable. There are just too many unknowns. If they do, it will be as hunter-gatherers.

He’s got yet another b.s. piece today, this time quoting the IPCC’s “conclusions” which is a mixture of bad science, omission and watered-down estimates. He crafted an entire essay on this with the usual feel-good, it’ll still be okay hopium.

I could spit nails. More pulp fiction for the masses.

There seems to be a clear agenda to continue to spew forth ridiculous claims and promises that everything is going to be okay, that there is no need to be alarmed, just “concerned” while the freight train rushes off the cliff of habitability.
