For those that don’t know (I did not – AJ shared this), there is a great paper written here (*.pdf format) by Professor Jem Bendell, “Deep Adaptation: A Map for Navigating Climate Tragedy”.
Concise and to the point, the paper reflects my own positions on science, reticence, collapse, and the global emergency that now exists.
Jem is a much better writer then I am and provides numerous references to support the papers main points. A good read.
He also covers how humans are banking on denial in the video below, and I do not mean “climate denial”. Denial on how we will respond, fail to respond, and respond quite badly (choose the wrong things to do), which I’ve also discussed in the past. This paper is definitely in agreement with my own observations and commentary on what we can expect.
I’ve read through the entire thing and endorse this as a “must read”. It’s as scary as the predictions I’ve made, including massive starvation, societal collapse and imminent doom. Jem is also aware of the problems within the scientific community with reporting the whole truth. His paper was rejected for publication (science is afraid to tell the truth), so he self-published.
Jem also have a Youtube video that is worth watching (turn off any browser blocking that might prevent you from viewing the video):
(I’m not a fan of the closing segment with Toni Spencer which begins at 44:08. I do not find this kind of distracting disassembling useful at all and think it takes away from the message and impact that Jem conveyed so well).
The video portrays the food collapse occurring right now, and a quick point on the financial collapse. He also makes the point that all we can actually do is “get ready”. Bang, dead on with how we should be responding. He also recommends some policies. I don’t think these go far enough, but it’s definitely on the right track.
Nice review of the paper can be found here – New outlook on global warming: Best prepare for social collapse, and soon
