I’ve been watching the COP21 reports with interest. I’ve kept my silence while the pretenders garnered the spotlight. Today, I read this piece from Joe Romm –

As part of a concerted effort to avoid catastrophic climate change, the world unanimously committed to an ongoing effort of increasingly deeper emissions reductions aimed at keeping total warming “to well below 2 °C [3.6 °F] above preindustrial levels.” The full text of this Paris Agreement goes even further, with the parties agreeing “to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C above preindustrial levels, recognizing that this would significantly reduce the risks and impacts of climate change.”

In Historic Paris Climate Deal, World Unanimously Agrees To Not Burn Most Fossil Fuels

There is absolutely no way I’m buying this feel-good-let’s-go-on-pretending-we’re-ok baloney.

Romm is a funny guy. He’ll write about escalating disasters and strident warnings from climate scientists, then he switches tactics and issues the warm fuzzy stuff that is supposed to make everyone feel better.

Since physics cares nothing for how humans feel (or the words we write), what we “say” and what “happens” rarely meet. So let’s examine what’s happening – oh, wait, Romm already HAS done that, but here he’s ignoring his own words!

Limiting warming to 2°C as oft-claimed is HOGWASH and has been for years. Romm knows this, he’s written about it. Since nothing is being done about carbon saturation in the world’s oceans, emissions from sources like tropical forest AND forest fires (to say nothing of the CO₂ already in the atmosphere), and the methane release now escalating worldwide, and all the missing ice and warming water, and, and, and… ad infinitum, the empty promises of limiting warming to 2°C are simply more lies from the establishment.

And lest we forget, 2°C is well-known now to mean collapse of civilization, but was “chosen” to represent a far-off figure years ago by an economist! But it has NO basis for survival of society and NEVER has. Look at what just .85 °C has caused already! It won’t be double that level of disasters ahead, more like quadriple or quintiple because at 2°C the ice WILL ALL BE GONE where it matters the most! The increase atmospheric evaporation will exceed 10% (already up 4% and climbing) energizing MASSIVE storms and extreme weather events. How could Romm forget this? This is unforgivable.

Moreover, 2°C will NEVER happen because we have ZERO abilities known to man to remove sufficient quantities of CO₂ or methane in the time frames specified. NOTHING is being done about the largest emitter of all (agriculture), so targeting just one source (fossil fuels) will NOT solve the problem. Civilization IS the problem – how we live, how many we are, what we do, but hey, let’s not talk about that because it might hurt our economy

Projections of 4°C and more are 100% certain now – and this will collapse civilization (no food production along with many other severe impacts). Nobody is preparing for this decline – why not? It’s in-your-face obvious now.

I’m glad we have “promises” to stop burning fossil fuels, but human behavior being what it is, and given our track record to issue empty promises like free paper bags at a glue-sniffing contest, it is extremely unlikely that these promises will materialize at the speed and scale essential for civilization to continue.

Essentially what Romm has wrote is a Hail Mary – we’re going to make it in time and yet, there is nothing at all behind these empty words which do not take into account known outcomes such as “If we stopped burning all fossil fuels today, the world will still warm at accelerated rates”.

How Romm could completely fail to mention these known outcomes is unforgivable. Instead, he’s issuing another deception to the public. Unforgivable in my opinion, but then again, I’m not being paid to write anything.

GLAD to see the token hints of “progress” (twenty years too late) and I do indeed SUPPORT this, but I categorically reject the DECEPTIONS that this and other published articles like it imply. We are in a global planetary emergency RIGHT NOW. It’s irrelevant if humans are too stupid to realize the danger we are in.

There is a huge shift occurring within the climate aware community – those that keep pushing the party line message that 2°C is possible and within our grasp, and those that know it absolutely isn’t. We are also divided over how to do anything about this emergency. We absolutely do need to try, but I’ve see NOTHING that qualifies yet as taking this emergency as seriously as we should. Instead, it’s more delays, empty promises, finger pointing and evasive tactics to pretend it’s all going to be ok.

HOGWASH. Rapidly escalating climate disasters are impacting MILLIONS of people now. We have no ability to stop this – absolutely NONE. These events are accelerating and they will continue to impact civilization and lives around the world. Our ability to cope with these disasters is already taxed to the limits – and if the projections are to be believed (and they should, they’ve been right so far) – civilization is going to FAIL due to climate related events.

Now, toss in “no more fossil fuels” into this recipe and guess what? It means, “forget about our promises, we’re going to need the fossil fuels to help us survive”. Yep – that’s EXACTLY what’s going to happen. No fossil fuels means no survival. We are now in a very dangerous Catch-22 situation and some of us are fully aware of what this means. Population overshoot also means population collapse as civilization fails.

Too harsh?  Then read James Hansen’s comments on this “deal” –

“It’s a fraud really, a fake,” he says, rubbing his head. “It’s just bullshit for them to say: ‘We’ll have a 2°C warming target and then try to do a little better every five years.’ It’s just worthless words. There is no action, just promises. As long as fossil fuels appear to be the cheapest fuels out there, they will be continued to be burned.

James Hansen, father of climate change awareness, calls Paris talks ‘a fraud’

I’m not a fan of cap-and-trade “fees” proposed – because economizing the environment is the wrong approach and fails to address human behavior and the fundamental flaws within our civilization. Many like the fees – but I don’t. It won’t work anyway.

Here’s an interesting two minutes clip here well worth watching:

Now please watch this, very important message from Kevin Anderson on what is really going on, we’re committed to at least 4°C rise NOW:

Crisis is Worse Than We Think & Scientists Are Self-Censoring to Downplay Risk

Just like I’ve been saying – the scientists have NOT been telling us how bad it really is.
