It’s become painfully clear that U.S. journalism is poorly equipped to report the actual news. Why this matters will be covered in a moment.
It’s also become painfully clear that climate scientist are poorly equipped to sound the alarm. They’re great at their job, just no so great when it comes to telling us what it all means. Why this matters will be covered in a moment.
The media – and the scientist, get caught up in the minutia of the “story”, whatever it is. Examine for example, all the second guessing that went on regarding the Edward Snowden story. Everything from being a Chinese “spy” to a “communist infiltrator” to a “deliberate distraction” has been suggested. There are thousands of articles, blogs and commentary now attesting to this sort of useless gum-flapping. They are all dead wrong as the actual evidence now shows.
The same thing happens with climate scientists. How they obtained their data, what it reveals and how it interrelates with other known measurements is exhaustively analyzed. Visit any climate science forum and you will get the gist of what I mean. Scientists are (apparently) perfectly happy to debate to the end of time the exact amount of sea ice left in the Arctic, or the effects of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. There is no end to the discussion or the debate. From a scientific point of view, this is a good thing, as a rigorous, exhaustive approach and understanding is crucial to proving any scientific theory.
But what happens when theory becomes fact? When facts pile up on top of other relevant facts? Does science provide the world with the essential tools to notify humankind when an alarm must be raised?
Quite possibly not. The alarm has been (weakly) raised, the theory has been proven, and yet due to the scientific reticence in recent past – and the disgusting state of “hit” journalism in this country in particular – the alarm is being mostly ignored.
Instead, we are intreated with ridiculous news print, garbage that doesn’t even qualify as journalism. Who Cares About Global Warming is a perfect example of hit journalism. Glossing over critical details and omitting the outcome as if it doesn’t matter is criminal “reporting”. Personally, I think it’s just advertising, Forbes has ALWAYS been in the business of selling something (mostly disinformation and advertising space).
Well, at least someone is apparently “happy” about how things are going to turn out (without telling you). However, I am not. The latest climate news continues to portray a worsening future where there is zero chance that “10 billion will survive in a warming world”. Or even 3 billion. The media is indeed completely and hopelessly lost in the Dank Swamp of Nothingness now. I’m now going to consciously choose to abandon them all from here on out. They are doing nothing to help define my life, help my family, help inform me on what REALLY matters or do ANYTHING at all except spew forth endless reams of absolutely nonsense. The media is more then a government lackey, or disinformation mouthpieces, the media has become saboteurs to the future of humanity.
James Hansen’s recent paper, Climate Sensitivity, Sea Level, and Atmospheric CO₂ (pdf) is a good read. But you might get a little lost trying to figure out what it all really means, so go back and read the previous link (not actually called the Swamp of Nothingness).
We have FAR less time then we think. I’m already experiencing far higher temperatures here then in the past. Usually, I can run the air conditioner for about two weeks. It’s been on all summer. A “seat of your pants” test of what is happening, but temperatures, records, fires, droughts, all over the world (sunbathing in Siberia now) are being reported.
“We may be thinking that the worst thing might happen. Strictly speaking, we do not like what we see there. Absolutely. Do. Not. Like.”
It’s now beyond “red alert” time as far as I can tell. If there was another color of danger to convey the extreme danger humanity has now entered into, it would be a Black Alert. Black Alert to imply impending death, doom and destruction and to prepare accordingly.
Having ignored the red alert for too long, a Black Alert should be on everyone’s mind right now. But being almost entirely dependent on what everyone is being told – and what is not being told, then the vast majority of humanity will never know what hit them.
Nobody is preparing for this. Some have said “you can’t prepare for this”, but this isn’t entirely true. Between now and 2050 will be the catastrophic collapse of civilization, with extreme competition for food and water.
By “extreme”, I do mean “violent”. Nobody needs to be willfully ignorant of what this means. Among the violent will be those who did NOT prepare in any way. Losing homes, jobs, food and water, they will become the refugees I’ve long warned against.
Making no plans for critical shortages just makes you a soon-to-be victim. A Black Alert should be raised NOW, in order to raise the awareness of all of humanity to prepare as best as can be done for what is now occurring.
This is still better then the “deer-in-the-headlights” shock that will happen to millions of people.
