Mountain House Freeze Dried Food Cans

Oregon Freeze Dry was incorporated in 1963, when we began freeze drying fruit for a General Foods cereal. Later, we worked with the Department of Defense to develop and produce freeze dried military rations that tasted better, weighed less, and were easier to prepare than canned rations. By the early 1970's, we were marketing our own Mountain House line of freeze dried foods for outdoor recreational use. In the 1980's, the Company grew rapidly as we began to manufacture private label packaged food products, and expanded our food ingredient line.

Today, Oregon Freeze Dry is the world's technological leader in freeze drying. Our freeze dried ingredients are key components in the products of some of America's largest food companies. Our private label lines include such products as lunch and dinner entrees for the Nutri/System weight-loss program and the Gerber Graduate Mini's line. We're still a major supplier to the military, and our Mountain House brand continues to be the favorite of backpackers and campers.

Oregon Freeze Dry is located on a 35 acre site in Albany, Oregon, and employs over 300 people. The company has three manufacturing plants, which offer USDA and FDA registrations, according to product. Collectively, these plants represent 32,000 square feet of freeze drying capacity - over 60% of the freeze drying capacity in the US. Oregon Freeze Dry also has affiliate facilities in the United Kingdom and Denmark.

Simple Food Preparation!

Our freeze-dried foods are easy to prepare-just add hot water...wait 10 minutes...and eat! If a heat source is not available, room temperature or cold water can be used, too. Because no cooking is needed, these foods require much less water and fuel than most fresh, frozen or dehydrated foods (further conserving these two precious commodities.)

30 Year Shelf-Life!

Mountain House freeze-dried foods are packed in airtight NITROGEN PACKED #10 cans or pouches. Up to 98% of the residual oxygen has been removed. Our unique canning process uses both vacuum oxygen removal and nitrogen flushing. This is a time consuming and slightly more costly process...but well worth it. It is the same process mandated by the U.S. Military for whom we also can. Our foods will have the longest shelf life available...up to 30 years! We've been around for 40 years so we know first hand. Each of our cans is coated with a protective enamel inside and out for double protection, including the lid. The cans contents are protected until you are ready to open and use them. After opening, we recommend using the contents with 2 to 3 weeks for best results and taste; using the convenient resealable plastic lid between uses. Treat any leftover food as you would fresh food.

All the goodness, flavor, and taste are locked in just if you had hand-made them yourself from scratch. In comparison, other food companies do not freeze-dry or cook their own foods. They blend the dry components of other companies and package them. Mountain House foods tastes as close to fresh, frozen, or better, as you can get. Pouches - 7+ Year Shelf Life!

As of 2006, we have changed our shelf life from 5 years to 7+ YEARS!!! Based on storage studies conducted over many years, our shelf life is at least 7 years from date of manufacture, as long as pouch is stored unopened in a cool area. After 7 years, a change in flavor and appearance may be noticed. For best results, avoid prolonged storage at temperatures above 75° F (24° C).

Mountain House Vs. Wise Foods - Oxygen Testing Results

Mountain House has issued a press release regarding oxygen content in Wise Foods (pdf file).

The following statements are from Columbia Food Laboratories, who conducted third party testing on Wise Foods and Mountain House products:

"For proper long-term food storage, it's important to maintain oxygen exposure as low as possible," said Lee Goin, laboratory director at Columbia Food Laboratories. "Oxygen causes rancidity in foods containing unsaturated fats. Even slight rancidity can make a food undesirable. Oxygen causes nutritional value to be lost, especially vitamins A, C, D and E. Removal of oxygen will kill any insects, larvae and their eggs that may be present."

"Mountain House commissioned Columbia Food Laboratories to test 30 samples of dehydrated and freeze dried meals from Wise Company as well as 30 samples of comparable Mountain House freeze dried meals. The study found that average oxygen levels in Wise Company products were 18.25%, nearly the 21% level found in the atmosphere and 110 times higher than the average 0.16% oxygen found in Mountain House products. The most alarming part is that Wise Company products in this study were manufactured in April of 2012 and already exhibit near-atmospheric levels of oxygen, which would not provide a 25-year shelf life."

Information on Manufacture Date

The product manufacturing code appears on the back of Mountain House® pouches and on the bottom of Mountain House® cans. The date in the code represents the date on which the product was packaged. As of January 2001 we are now printing BEST IF USED BY dates on the back of each pouch.

028 = Julian Date (example = 28th day of the year = January 28)
CIA = Production Operator's Initials
