Arctic Old Ice Now Down to 1%

The title is not a misprint. Artic old ice (4 years old or older) is now down to just 1%.

This poses severe issues going forward, because it means that sudden melt of the Arctic is now possible.

NOAA’s 2018 Arctic Report Card is definitely worth watching – there is some very scary information contained within this video:

If you didn’t watch it, here are a few highlights:

Trump Approves America’s Energy Addiction – Drilling In Arctic Waters

For someone who claims he’s a “genius” but incessantly lies thousands and thousands of times now, we could reasonably expect the man and his Administration to go on lying about the environment and climate change. Which is of course, what they’ve been doing since he took office.

Now they want to drill for oil in the Arctic waters. What could possibly go wrong? More to the point – does anybody even care anymore? Continuing to feed the gusher demand for oil is alleged to be on the pathway to “energy independence” but in reality, it is a crack-like addiction to hell by planet-destroying companies who’s only real motive is profits.

The Insane Exploitation Plans Of The Arctic

Reprinted here from – http://resourceinsights.blogspot.com/2017/08/arctic-riches-most-insane-discussion.html

(timely reasonable observation on the insanity developing over the Arctic – Admin)

Arctic riches: A most insane discussion by Kurt Cobb

As climate change rips away the icy armor of the Arctic, nations surrounding the North Pole and companies eager to exploit the area’s mineral wealth–particularly oil and natural gas–are growing giddy with anticipation.

6C- 8°C Temperature Increase Projections For Asia – Exceeding Survivable Wet Bulb Temperatures

A watered-down report for Asia contains this misleading title – “Unabated climate change would reverse the development gains in Asia

Under a business-as-usual scenario, a 6 degree Celsius temperature increase is projected over the Asian landmass by the end of the century. Some countries in the region could experience significantly hotter climates, with temperature increases in Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the northwest part of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) projected to reach 8 degree Celsius, according to the report, titled “A Region at Risk: The Human Dimensions of Climate Change in Asia and the Pacific.

Is This The Start of Runaway Global Warming?

This is an essay by William P Hall, President, Kororoit Institute, Evolutionary Biology of Species and Organisms.

The observations show a growing risk to human society from runaway global warming, and they beg explanation.

This essay focuses on observations of what appears to be the start of runaway warming in the Arctic that may have profound effects on global climates over the next few years; and a plausible cause – the warming driven release of methane gas from permafrost forming a strong greenhouse cap over the Arctic Ocean.

India under intense heat wave: Temperatures soaring to abnormal levels well ahead of the summer season: Maharashtra records record 46.5C (114F)

This is a dangerous development, months ahead of the normal summer heat: India under intense heat wave: Temperatures soaring to abnormal levels well ahead of the summer season: Maharashtra records record 46.5C (114F).

I doubt if a bunch of dead people will gain the attention of the idiotic world leaders who have chosen to play “Trumpy See, Trumpy Do”, but a heat wave of this magnitude this early is revealing that things are changing rapidly.

You Will Either Live Through This, or You Will Die Because Of It. But You Will Not Be Able To Ignore It.

The large majority of people from scientists to policy makers addressing the issue of climate change still assert that we can stop global heating by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. But is this a fact or an unsupported assumption?

Why is it reasonable to assume that we can still stop global heating & the resultant climate changes, which some estimate could be the largest climate change event in 50 million years, and will end civilization as we’ve known it even with a 100% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions tomorrow, let alone 50% by 2050?

Review: 10 Most Important Climate Stories of 2016

This is the time of year when bloggers and websites will publish their 2016 Year in Review, Photo essays and other dubious human “achievements” for 2016. I am not going to bother because by and large, it’s all bullshit. Under-reporting our global crisis is not what I do.

I like Climate Central, so this isn’t a slight against their efforts. But it is very, very important that we not get enamored with bogus “achievements” (hopium) that do not accomplish what is claimed. So here are the 10 Most Important Climate Stories of 2016 from Climate Central.

The bells are tolling

Here’s an editorial from a foreign source – obviously “they get it”. Or do they? On one hand, it’s game-over, but then like most articles today, they immediately start backtracking on their own comments. Bolded by me for emphasis, commentary in brackets [mine].

My Gift To You

Rolling Stone magazine has a new article featuring James Hansen: Will We Miss Our Last Chance to Save the World From Climate Change?

Hansen is another scientist, who having done a tremendous amount of work informing the world on climate change, does not believe his own data or the conclusion it means.

He does admit that even reforestation and improved agriculture practices won’t work, but at the same time advocates carbon-taxes to be given back to the peasants in a fantasy move of combating climate change and thus lowering individual carbon footprints. As if that would be enough now, or would even work because it certainly won’t.

National Connedsumer Day Nearly Here

National connedsumer day is nearly here again. I won’t be celebrating, as I never do. I did brave the misery monkey’s briefly, making a mad dash for more victuals for the winter. It was jammed packed. Cashiers always wish me a merry xmas, but I never really know what to say in return. It’s not xmas. It’s not anything, certainly not the birthday of Christ, Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny. But it is national connedsumer day, which for whatever reason, is widely celebrated.

The Politics of Pretend

Arctic News: Over 20 Of The Most Terrifying Images on 2016 (already posted in the recent comments, but I didn’t have the rest of this article ready).

Warning of 10°C increases within 10 years fails all calls to action. It’s been clear for some time now that nothing will cause us to act, so let me discuss this observation:

There is a lot of talk of what it is going to mean to scientists, Americans and the world at large to live under the Trump Administration. Within climate, environmental and human rights groups, there is a plenty of hand-wringing, finger pointing and complaining going on right now (where WERE you people two years ago?).

Crisis of Conscience

Hot Whopper has a Dilbert Whopper article (as in Scott Adams, the Dilbert cartoonist) worth reading through (including the comments). Hot Whopper also shared a very good rebuttal from Variable Varability – “Scott Adams: The Non-Expert Problem and Climate Change Science“.

I would not have been so polite. Adams “model” points he used are red herrings. Ultimately, “what the models say” is irrelevant. Actual, on the ground, real-life measurements, taken over hundreds of years are empirical measurements. They do not tell a “story” or a unlearned “opinion” or represent a corporate interest, they tell the real facts. This is where denialists fail so often and so badly, they don’t use facts and they don’t like empirical evidence either.

Extreme Events Escalating Worldwide Part IV

There is always plenty of news to report on the ongoing signs of collapse. These can each be called ‘extreme events’. Taken together, they portray a future that will be very difficult indeed.

There is a lot of hand-wringing over this – and (still) endless amounts of hopium by all the usual shills that ‘something can be done’ while steadfastly refusing to take into account our track record, our inability to resolve our differences, our lack of political will, and finally the hour-glass of time we never really had. My position on all this remains the same as always.

Record flooding in Louisiana may get worse – “Colossal amounts of rain”.

Louisiana flooding, evacuation and rescues – There will be more.

Flooding Now Causing Most Crop Damages – The extremes of drought and rain are vying for 1st place.

Wildlife and Plants Feeling the Heat – “It’s a wicked problem”. “It’s almost all bad news. … We’re sleepwalking to disaster”.

Climate Destabilizing – Beckwith Declares a Global Emergency

July 2016 – Hottest Month On World Record

Arctic Fish Populations Changing As Ice Dwindles

Case For Declaration of Climate Emergency – Paul Beckwith on why we have a global emergency right now. I’ve summarized below. He’s years late (behind me at least).

  • Ocean Acidity has increased >30% in the last decades
  • Oxygen levels are declining 6x faster then oceanographers expected
  • Global ocean circulation patterns are being disrupted
  • CO₂ levels in June 2016 are startlingly higher then June 2015
  • Methane levels are 1850 ppb and rapidly climbing; especially in the Arctic
  • Global temperatures continue to spike higher, exceeding the Paris targets for an entire month this year
  • Global biodiversity has already declined by 50%
  • Massive global coral reef bleaching and dying events; kelp and sea grass bed destruction; global ocean phytoplankton decline
  • Massive boreal forest dieback; Amazon forest die back; global sinks for carbon dioxide in decline
  • 25% of the world’s ocean fish spend their lives on reefs, what will happen to them when reefs are gone?
  • Massive fires in the Amazon, boreal forest and other northern regions simultaneously reducing carbon sinks and raising atmospheric carbon dioxide
  • Arctic albedo rapidly declining due to disappearing Arctic sea ice and snow cover
  • The risk of losing all Arctic sea ice (Blue Ocean Event) on or around 2020
  • Northern hemisphere jet streams slowing and becoming much wavier leading to increases in frequency, severity and duration of extreme weather events
  • Melt rates from Greenland and Antarctica are increasing exponentially, leading to a doubling every decade, this is leading to an exponentially increasing sea level rise
  • The globe will experience food shortages soon as simultaneous crop failures occur from extreme weather events including drought and torrential rains

There’s more (a lot more) most of which is already recorded on this blog.

Everyone In America Is Going To Become A Survivalist

Looks like we may see a blue ocean event this year (from Arctic News):

May-11-2016-2

Another graph of interest – U.S. Bee Keepers lost 44 percent of their bees in 2015 – 2016 (from Desdemona Despair):

Annual-honeybee-loss-2016-300dpi[7]

Shaping up to be a devastating year. The loss of Arctic sea ice will be a “first” in human history and will set the Arctic on fire (too hot) and the surrounding ocean, warming up the rest of the planet even faster, accelerating methane hydrates and permafrost melt and raising ocean temperatures even more. The Jet Stream will become even more erratic then it already is, dumping huge storms in different places as the hydrological cycle goes absolutely ape-shit. Increasing atmospheric moisture will go even higher.

Denying Reality Means Disaster

Serious, serious development now unfolding in the Arctic… the ice is rapidly disappearing and then all that incredible heat goes directly into the world’s oceans… accelerating devastating storms, wildlife deaths, plankton die-off, oxygen levels dropping, etc. Summer 2016 will be either ice-free or nearly so, and that means RAPID AND DANGEROUS ACCELERATION of climate related events WORLDWIDE.

Arctic 18F Above Normal

From Record-Shattering February Warmth Bakes Alaska, Arctic 18°F Above Normal –

“It was so hot last month that large parts of the Arctic averaged more than 18°F (10°C) above normal.”

And something quite ominous – Arctic News is predicting extreme jumps in temperatures over land (surface of the Earth, not just the Arctic) that are unsurvivable in just ten years.
